Team News & Updates
Last weekend saw the most recent installment of the annual clash between the Taiwan-based South Africans, and whoever's left over.
After 6 years of defeats, the World 15 planned long in advance this year and assembled the best team it had ever put together. In a big plus for the sport in Taiwan, the team included several members of the local Giants team, also based in Taipei.
Of course the South Africans had their usual formidable outfit, resulting in a back and forth game that was still scoreless with only 8 mins left to play. Just when it looked like the game might end in a scoreless draw, A-Tien, the World 15 centre crashed over from close range. 5-0 is how it ended in front of a crowd of about 250 supporters.
Everyone who has been fortunate enough to play in a few of these clashes would agree that, in terms of the rugby, this was far and away the best, most competitive and most entertaining match between the two sides. Not only that but the organization that went into the event was a big step up from past years and, for that, many thanks have to go to the numerous people who selflessly offered their time and event-coordination expertise.
As far as achieving the event goals laid out in advance, the day was a huge success. Particularly satisfying was having many Taiwanese spectators come up to the Baboons after the game to say what a fantastic match it was; and having the local boys who participated in the match say that they'd love to be involved in the next one. Bring on next year!
